The first issue of magnificent explores the tension between significant personal loss alongside the everyday loss of life at the King Island Abbattoir, the culling of native animals and the large numbers of roadkill present on the island. King Island is situated in the Bass Strait, Located approximately 80 km northeast of Tasmania and about 90 km southeast of Cape Otway on the Victorian coast. The island is home to a community of approx. 1600 people. Main industries on the island are Beef and Dairy farming, the abbattoir, Kelping and fishing.

This issue of magnificent emerged through a collaborative residency with James Newitt at the King Island Cultural Centre, awarded through Arts Tasmania in 2008. Several subsequent visits to the island led to the production of the first issue of magnificent.
